Stabilize the Camera

Because low-light or night photography typically requires slower shutter speeds to gather enough light for a “good” exposure, finding a way to stabilize the camera during the exposure is critical if you want an image with good focus and no motion blur.

Brace the Camera. Find a stable surface (a wall, table, ledge, car roof, friend’s shoulder) and brace the camera against it to keep it as still as possible during the exposure (Figure 34.1).

Use a Tripod. This is the classic way to stabilize a camera. Tripods are available in a wide range of sizes, from compact models that will easily fit in a coat pocket to bendable tripods that can be mounted in difficult locations to selfie stick/tripod combos (Figure 34.2). In most cases you’ll also need to acquire special mounting hardware to attach the iPhone to the tripod (Figure 34.3).
